The Crest’s Nature Summer Day Camp 2023

Join us for The Crest’s popular Nature Summer Day Camp at Willow-Witt Ranch in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument beginning Monday, June 26, 2023.

Sessions run Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, June 26 through August 11, 2023.

Students ages 6-11 will join our experienced instructors in exploring forests, wetlands, western pond turtles, wildlife, goats, chickens, and dogs at an organic farm. Campers will take home bags of organic produce of their choice each week. Activities include nature journaling, games, art projects, music, vegetable gardening, and service learning.

Each Wednesday this summer, students will explore a different area of the Monument with rangers from Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

Indoor space with air purifiers will be available in Ashland schools in case of wildfire smoke.

The Crest provides a bus with stops in Medford, Talent, and Ashland. Some scholarships will be available again this summer.

Who’s flying?
red-breasted nuthatch

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Red-breasted Nuthatches prefer spending their time in conifer forests, and forage for seeds from these trees throughout the winter. These birds make their nests in holes they create in snags, and smear sticky pitch around the entrance to the nest to prevent predators from entering!

What’s blooming?
cattails

Cattails

In spring, cattails begin to produce young shoots that can eventually reach heights of nine feet! This growth, and the energy that fuels it, comes from the rhizome: the tuber-like, underground structure of the plant. By summer time, the cattails will produce their iconic fuzzy brown flowers.
