Ashland Food Co-op Change for Good

Small Change, Big Impact! 🌱💚

$7,996.52. That’s a whole lot of pennies and we’re feeling incredibly grateful!

Thanks to the Ashland Food Co-op’s Change for Good program, shoppers spent the month of August rounding up their purchases to support The Crest. Those little bits of change added up to an incredible $7,996.52 in support of environmental education and our work connecting people with the natural world.

Change for Good has been turning spare change into meaningful community support since 2020. Each year, Ashland Food Co-op owners vote for a group or local organization working to make a difference in areas like environmental sustainability, healthy food, equity and inclusion, basic needs, and arts and culture. Then, shoppers get to turn their everyday grocery trips into an opportunity to give back one handful of cents at a time.

For The Crest, this support means more opportunities for kids, families, and community members to explore, learn, and care for the farm, forest, water, and each other. It helps us continue creating hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity, stewardship, and a deeper connection to the place we call home!

And, of course, we couldn’t do it without you!

A huge thank you to Ashland Food Co-op, its owners and employees, and every shopper who rounded up for The Crest. We’re so grateful to be part of a community that believes in creating positive change, one small action at a time.

Education Team Update

The Crest education coordinator Liz Blanco displays native plant for discussionWe wrapped up another season of Nature Day Camp!

Our highlights included making farm fresh food this summer with fresh spring rolls full of garden greens, onions, mint and special handmade dipping sauce, garden fresh rice bowls and plant part salads where campers cut up roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits.

Campers learned about the birds on the land and many had up close views of the Sandhill Cranes. They also learned about the western pond turtle and the importance of stewarding our wetlands as they are integral to a thriving watershed and provide a beneficial nursery for migrating birds, specific plants such as camas and willow and home to our western pond turtles.

Art in the barn, visits to tree island and time with the animals were favorites for the day campers, as they immersed themselves in the world of Willow Witt ranch.

We will miss this special time on the mountain where we have long sunny days of nature play and creativity in a diverse ecosystem with children. But we are super excited to get ready for Fall Programs and watch the season change with the visiting youth.

This Fall, high school and middle school students will stay overnight in the CREST wall tents and enjoy land based learning and stewardship. Some groups will be pulling teasel in our Wetlands as a way to help us manage and reduce invasive species. We will also be hosting school field trips and focusing on learning about the cycle of farm and forest seeds and indigenous foods.

We are grateful for summer fun and ready for fall learning days.

Fall Fungi in the Forest!

We’re heading into the woods this fall to see what fungi the Ranch has to discover! Join us for a slow-paced fungi discovery hike around Willow-Witt Ranch, led alongside Wyatt from Southern Oregon Land Conservancy.

We’ll take our time exploring the property, searching for fungi, sharing what we find, and trying our hand at identifying some of our discoveries along the way. Whether you’re a seasoned mushroom enthusiast or simply curious about what’s growing beneath your feet, there’s plenty to discover!

All ages welcome! Come ready to wander, wonder, and get curious!

Moth Night Event Recap!

We had a wonderful evening exploring the fascinating world of moths with Dana Ross and Pollinator Project Rogue Valley! After having to reschedule due to smoke, we were especially excited to welcome a great crowd up on the Ranch! Together, we spent the evening discovering the incredible diversity of moths found right here on the Ranch, learning about their unique adaptations, and getting a closer look at these often-overlooked nocturnal neighbors. It was a lovely opportunity to slow down, explore the Ranch after dark, and share in a little nighttime wonder!

Petals and Pollinators Workshop Recap

We had a wonderful day creating, learning, and connecting with Zebith Thalden during Petals & Pollinators! Participants had the opportunity to explore the connections between art and the natural world while learning new creative skills and spending time together. A smoky weekend meant we had to move the event indoors, but that didn’t stop us from finding ways to stay connected to the outdoors. It was a fun reminder that nature inspiration can follow us wherever we go!
